Jackson’s Distractions?

What’s going on here?

Hello to all current and potential readers of my Substack! Thanks for checking out my writing.

Here you will find posts that will tend to fall into one of two categories (with some overlap):

  1. Partially edited short stories. These are often slightly, largely, or entirely fictionalized accounts of things that actually happened or could, someday, happen to me or someone I know. Sometimes they are accounts of things that have happened or could happen to someone I don’t know, things that wouldn’t happen to someone I might know, or things that could never happen to anyone. As for the editing, everything I post here is probably a second or third draft, but not necessarily a final product. If you have thoughts or recommendations, let me have ‘em.

  2. Cultural thoughts, feelings, or criticism. I spend a lot of time thinking about sports, movies, literature, music, comedy, television, travel, psychology, technology, and pretty much any other way people interact with each other and express themselves. I’m a fan first and foremost; I appreciate creativity, diversion, and beauty wherever I can find it. Sometimes something someone else has created inspires me to respond to, expand on, or recommend what I’ve seen, heard, experienced, or learned. These pieces of writing might take the form of lists, diary entries, reviews, or vague observations.

What’s the point?

I’ve wanted to organize and share my writing for years. Why am I doing it now? 3 reasons:

  1. Sharing the work I’ve done so far and what I’m working on now. When I have an audience of any size, I’m motivated to write more often and with more care. Whether you know me or not, I hope you enjoy reading my stuff! Share it with anyone else you think might.

  2. Meeting other writers. Although I do most of my writing alone, I could really benefit from meeting, talking to, and reading the work of other writers. In fact, being a young, unpublished writer has been somewhat difficult, and I have a hunch it would be more enjoyable with some sort of creative community. If you read something I’ve written and think, “hey, this guy needs to meet this other person,” put us in touch!

  3. Soliciting writing advice. If anything draws your attention (good or bad), let me know. It could be as small as “this sentence made me laugh” or as big as “eliminate this entire story and write about something else.”

Whatever brings you here, thank you for supporting me and reading what I’ve written. There is more on the way.
